KUWAIT CITY, Jan 20: Maki restaurant chefs secured two gold medals during the live sushi competition at the Horeca 2018 culinary event. In addition, Maki won 4 bronze medals, one of which was in the Asian cuisine  competition. Inaugurated in 2012, Horeca (short for Hotel-Restaurant-Café) is the largest culinary festival in Kuwait which takes place each year, and includes exhibitions, live competitions, and seminars/ workshops. In its seventh  edition, the Kuwait version of Horeca was the biggest so far, including more exhibitors than ever before, and showcasing the latest in food supply products on offer. Alongside the various food vendors’ stands, the culinary art show — which includes several categories — took place over a span of three days. Competitions such as live meat, open basket, chocolate and ice carving, pasta, sandwich making, Kuwaiti dish, and sushi were some of the main categories where the top chef talent from hospitality establishments competed. Headed by Mrs Nabeela Al Anjari, General Manager Leaders Group for Consultancy and Development, and Mohamad Najia, Executive Director, Horeca Kuwait, the event registered an unprecedented visitor count, and put on display an array of talent that is prevalent in the Kuwait market. Maki’s chefs participated in several categories, while displaying their sushi making skills and presented the audience and international judges with beautifully put together sushi and Maki displays, while using exclusive, exotic ingredients. “Garnering the two top medals in the live sushi competition was the highlight of the event for us, however, we consider everyone who participated from Maki and other establishments as a winner. This is an event that, in my opinion, aims to develop local chefs’ characters along with their skillset by challenging them year after year to be more innovative and to work under pressure”, explained Maki Group’s Executive Chef Louis Kenji Huang.
